Researchers discover Soy may help reduce Colorectal Cancer risk.
Soy contains phytoestrogens, compounds that have estrogen-like properties. For years, women have been taking phytoestrogen supplements to help reduce symptoms associated with menopause such as hot flashes. In addition, there have been studies showing that soy helps reduce cholesterol and maintain healthy bone density. But there’s more good news about soy. Previous clinical studies have suggested that dietary phytoestrogens may help reduce the risk of certain hormonal cancers (e.g. breast and prostate). And now intake of phytoestrogenic compounds may help reduce the risk for colorectal cancer.
In a 3-year, Canadian study of about 3000 participants aged 20-74, researchers found that dietary intake of soy isoflavones resulted in a significant reduction in colorectal cancer risk.1.
This study is important in that it shows there are potentially modifiable risk factors associated with some types of cancer.
